Running for the Needy
- (from George)

Running a marathon for a good cause is not a new concept.  People run for cancer research, disaster relief, the care of orphans, and many other charitable causes.  I have supported others who have run marathons for good causes and always found it rewarding.  This led me to ask the question, "Since we are engaged directly in mission work with the poor, why not run a marathon for the people we are serving in Albania?"

Deciding to run a marathon is one thing.  Actually doing it is something else.  I have been in training since May and things are going quite well.  I have done training runs of up to 12 miles and besides some pretty gruesome blisters and the normal aches and pains of a 47 year old, I am fairly happy with my progress.  Some of my biggest challenges involve training in Albania, where the road surfaces, smog level, traffic volume, and heat are not the most conducive for marathon training.  I chose the Detroit Marathon because Detroit is my hometown and I will be able to spend more time with my family while I am there.

Our hope is that people who have an interest in mission work, and/or an interest in helping the needy in a very direct and tangible way will support this run.  Also, our hope is that people will share this opportunity to support mission work with their family, friends, parish brothers and sisters, as well as coworkers.  The need in Albania is great and so is the need for your support and to let others know about this opportunity to help feed the hungry in Albania.
